Riverside Avondale
Historic homes, parks, restaurants, Five Points, and the Cummer fill an easy neighborhood-and-culture half day.
Northbank, Southbank, Riverside Avondale, Five Points, the Cummer, Memorial Park, and San Marco
Follow one St. Johns River segment into the Cummer Museum, Riverside Avondale, Five Points, or San Marco without repeated bridge crossings.
Historic homes, parks, restaurants, Five Points, and the Cummer fill an easy neighborhood-and-culture half day.
Downtown river views, civic spaces, bridges, and event venues surround Northbank hotels.
Skyline views, riverfront hotels, Friendship Fountain surroundings, and San Marco access shape the opposite bank.
A compact square, restaurants, theater, and surrounding residential streets suit an evening south of the river.
Art and garden
The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens anchors a focused visit with galleries, historic gardens, and direct St. Johns River context. Check current admission, hours, exhibitions, garden access, and any weather closures.
Memorial Park and Five Points extend the outing without changing districts. Avondale’s commercial streets make a natural later meal, but they are not one continuous pedestrian strip with the museum.

Water as connection
The River Taxi links selected downtown stops and adds special-event service. Regular service is not daily, the Riverside dock is Saturday-only, and pickups can pause during tours; verify the current route, service day, fares, and weather status.
Use the boat for a confirmed point-to-point crossing or event trip. Otherwise drive to the next district and park there for the evening.

Compact evening
San Marco Square concentrates restaurants, shops, and theater in a compact district south of the river. It is easier to enjoy after the riverfront or hotel break than as a midday drive-by.
Riverside, Avondale, Five Points, and San Marco are distinct areas. Choose the evening by restaurant, performance, and lodging geography rather than treating all historic neighborhoods as one walk.

Cummer, riverfront, and neighborhood evening
Start with the Cummer galleries and river gardens, then walk through Memorial Park or Five Points.
Eat in Five Points or Avondale before leaving Riverside, or cross once for a downtown lunch.
Walk an open Northbank or Southbank segment; use the River Taxi only when its published route fits the crossing.
Finish among San Marco’s square and theater or Avondale’s restaurants and historic streets.
Conditions and access
Beginning August 24, 2026, the Main Street Bridge southbound pedestrian walkway is scheduled to close and southbound traffic is reduced to one lane during work expected through January 30, 2027. Verify Riverwalk segments and crossings on the City’s I Dig Jax page.
Summer heat, humidity, thunderstorms, and exposed pavement can turn a modest-looking route into a poor midday plan.
The Cummer, River Taxi, museums, theaters, markets, and events operate on their own schedules. Confirm before building the day around them.

Common questions
No. Each has walkable pieces, but the districts are separated by distance, river crossings, and exposed corridors. Walk within a district, then use a planned transfer.
Treat it as schedule- and weather-dependent transportation. Verify the current route and service day, and keep a driving or rideshare alternative.
Riverside Avondale or San Marco usually gives a compact mix of restaurants and local streets. The right choice depends on the hotel and the next morning’s direction.
