4-day / 3-night itinerary

Three nights in Jacksonville: river and Atlantic coast

Arrive into a neighborhood evening, give the beaches a full day, devote the second full day to the St. Johns and historic districts or a major event, then choose one focused departure stop.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

A three-night Jacksonville route connects one coast day with one river-and-neighborhood day.

Best length

4 days / 3 nights

Three nights create two complete days plus useful arrival and departure windows. Add a night for Amelia Island, St. Augustine, or a deeper Timucuan outing; they are extensions, not padding for Jacksonville’s core stay.

Stay

Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront

A Northbank hotel on the St. Johns River with a rooftop pool, 24-hour gym, and on-site dining. Its downtown…

Main activity

the St. Johns River, Riverside Avondale, San Marco, Atlantic beaches, Mayport, and Timucuan marshes

Use the Atlantic coast for the first full day and the St. Johns River with Riverside Avondale or San Marco for the second.

Daily geography

One side of the city at a time

Cluster the Beaches and Mayport; cluster downtown, Riverside, and San Marco; give Fort George Island and the Timucuan preserves their own drive.

Live-oak street in Riverside Avondale
Use arrival evening for Riverside Avondale, Five Points, or San Marco rather than crossing the whole city.
Jacksonville Beach at sunrise
Give the Atlantic coast its own full day, with one beach town and one compatible nature or Mayport stop.
River Taxi on the St. Johns
Walk one riverfront segment, then continue to Riverside Avondale or San Marco without repeated bridge crossings.
Fort Caroline landscape above the St. Johns
Use departure morning for one focused museum, preserve, garden, or riverfront return.

Arrival

Dinner and a short Riverside or San Marco walk.

Check in near the riverfront or historic neighborhoods, eat nearby, and save the long cross-city drives for the full days.

4:00 PM

Check in

Stay at Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront.

A Northbank hotel on the St. Johns River with a rooftop pool, 24-hour gym, and on-site dining. Its downtown setting is the most useful of these options for riverfront walks,…

6:30 PM

First dinner

Start with Town Hall Restaurant Jacksonville.

Keep this stop close to the day's route and confirm current hours before relying on it.

Day 2

Atlantic beach, Hanna Park, and Mayport.

Choose Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach, or Hanna Park, then continue only to Mayport or Beaches Town Center. Check current surf, park, and Little Talbot shoreline alerts before leaving.

8:30 AM

Breakfast

Eat near the beach route.

Choose breakfast in the hotel district or near the selected beach, then keep the car east of the Intracoastal for the day.

10:00 AM

Main activity

Choose one Atlantic beach or Hanna Park.

Spend the main daylight window at Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach, or Hanna Park, then continue only to Mayport or Beaches Town Center.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return inland after the coast, not between beach stops.

Keep Hanna Park, Mayport, and the beach towns in one east-side route before dinner near the water.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Choose dinner at Dolce Vita Modern Italian.

Modern Italian cooking with house-made pasta, seafood, steaks, risotto, composed desserts, cocktails, and Italian wine. Check the current menu, reservations, and service hours…

Day 3

St. Johns River, Riverside Avondale, and San Marco.

Choose a downtown bank or Riverside morning, then finish over dinner in San Marco, Avondale, or Five Points. Check current Main Street Bridge and Riverwalk construction before setting the crossing.

8:30 AM

Breakfast

Park once within each district.

Riverwalk gaps, bridge approaches, heat, and service schedules make a deliberate segment better than an attempted all-day walk.

9:00 AM

River-city day

Pair one cultural stop with one neighborhood walk.

The Cummer Museum and gardens, Memorial Park, Five Points, Northbank and Southbank Riverwalks, and San Marco fit when the sequence avoids repeated bridge crossings.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Save the river crossing for a view or a reason.

Use the River Taxi when current service fits; otherwise drive to the final neighborhood and leave the car until dinner is finished.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Eat in San Marco, Avondale, or Five Points.

Choose a restaurant in the final neighborhood rather than crossing the St. Johns again for dinner.

Departure

One short stop before the airport or highway.

Use departure morning for the Cummer Museum, a neighborhood breakfast, or a brief riverfront walk only when hours and travel time allow.

9:00 AM

Departure morning

Choose breakfast or a short walk near the exit route.

Keep luggage, checkout, airport distance, and interstate traffic in view before adding a final stop.

11:00 AM

One last stop

Choose one final Jacksonville stop.

The Cummer Museum, Memorial Park, San Marco, or one riverfront segment can fit when it lies on the departure route and is open.
